The decision to use female names was based on the method used by naval meteorologists. The revised system was introduced in 1953 and used female names in the Latin alphabet. How did they come up with female names for hurricanes? (They retain that name if, or when, their speed is tracking to hurricane levels.) When do tropical storms get a specific name?Įvery year, tropical storms tracked by the National Hurricane Center are given a specific name when they reach the speed of 39 mph. Started in the ’90s, the day commemorates American surgeon and scientist John Jeffries (1745-1819), a native Bostonian of Revolutionary times, who is credited with taking America’s first daily weather observations starting in 1774. The word stuck, and thus a person who forecasts the weather has come to be called a meteorologist because he or she studies things that fall from the sky. He called it Meteorologica because it dealt with things that fell from the sky, like meteors. ![]() Why is a weatherman called a meteorologist? So weatherman or weather woman or weather presenter would be all right. You only call someone a meteorologist if they are one - the weather person might simply be a presenter. Several universities offer specialized broadcast meteorology programs, where students take classes in weather science, voice and articulation, and performance. Weathermen typically have an undergraduate degree in meteorology, and some take communications courses on the side. But in many cases, their given names are coincidental, suggesting perhaps they were always destined for weather greatness. In some cases, the names stem from the showmanship which is part of their jobs. Meteorologists and weather presenters boast some of the most colorful names of any profession.
